Beginning Lead Stained Glass with Gerry

Stained glass art class - Beginning Lead Stained Glass, a 6 Session Course - $ 200 
Start this 6-week journey into the world of leaded stained glass with Gerry. 6 session of 2 hours each covers the basics of stained glass. Perfect for beginners - no experience needed!  Choose from instructor-provided patterns and create your own leaded stained glass window, edged with a zinc frame, and equipped with handy hangers for easy display. Master the lead came process from pattern selection to finished product. Note: Students are required to purchase their glass before the second class. A list of required tools will be provided, and these tools will also need to be purchased by the student. Additional information is found below the calendars.

Beginning Lead Stained Glass - Art Class Information

  • Class length: 6 sessions, 2 hours per session (six weekly session in a row to the best of our scheduling ability)
  • Capacity: 8 students maximum
  • Class includes: Patterns, work surface
  • Please bring: Tools, work board and solder
    (these will be available for purchase during your first session through SW Art Glass).

Weekly Agenda - Stained Glass Art Class: Lead

  1. Week 1 discuss: tools, safety, lead, choose Patterns , Prep patterns, cutting glass and finishing your piece, practice cutting glass
  2. Week 2: Pattern placement, cutting glass for pattern, placing glass on cartoon, fitting to pattern and grinding, workshop time
  3. Week 3: Glass cutting, placing, framing, fitting pieces with lead, workshop time – discussion on soldering and practice
  4. Week 4: fitting and soldering, workshop time
  5. Week 5: Final fitting and soldering, finish framing, workshop time
  6. Week 6: Clean panel, install hangers, putty and finish, workshop time

Course Materials

Students will need to bring or purchase:

  • glass
  • glass cutter
  • running pliers
  • lead came
  • lead cutters or lead knife
  • grozing / glass break pliers
  • alcohol
  • putty
  • Sharpie markers – silver and black
  • metal putty knife
  • scissors
  • work board (24 x 24 x ½” pressboard with 90 degree angle edge) - I have these to sell for $25 each. You will need this by the end of class 2
  • soldering iron & iron holder
  • solder
  • stained glass soldering flux
  • flux brush
  • masking tape
  • small hammer
  • horseshoe nails
  • fid
  • stained glass polish

Tools that are helpful:

  • grinder for glass
  • small dustpan and brush
  • mechanics gloves or cotton gloves, and disposable nitrile glove
  • metal ruler with cork back
  • apron
  • pizza box for transporting project pieces
  • container for tools and supplies

Additional materials may be required depending on the chosen project.
Students receive a 10% discount on glass and hand tools purchased during the class.
