Copper Foil

Copper Foil Stained Glass: The Tiffany-Style Revolution

Copper foil is a versatile material used to create stunning stained glass windows and 3D pieces. The copper foil technique, often called 'Tiffany' stained glass, revolutionized stained glass art in the 19th century, enabling the creation of three-dimensional works. Copper foil allows for greater flexibility and intricate designs compared to traditional lead came. It's ideal for creating detailed patterns, curves, and 3D objects. Browse our selection of copper foil in various sizes and colors to find the perfect materials for your next stained glass project.

Copper Foil Tape – FAQs

What size copper foil should I use for 3mm (1/8") stained glass?

For standard 3mm (1/8") glass:

  • 5/32" → Extremely fine seam, intricate overlay
  • 3/16" → Very thin solder line, delicate detail work
  • 7/32" → Narrow solder bead, refined seams
  • 1/4" → Clean, tight solder line (traditional standard)
  • 5/16" → Slightly wider decorative seam
  • 3/8" → Fuller, stronger solder bead

Most stained glass artists use 7/32" or 1/4" as their everyday go-to widths.

What is the difference between standard copper foil, black backed foil, and silver backed foil?

  • Standard copper foil has a natural copper-colored backing. It is best used when finishing with natural solder or when the glass is opaque and edge color will not be visible.
  • Black backed copper foil has a black inner liner. It is ideal for projects finished with black patina and helps prevent copper from showing through transparent or cathedral glass edges.
  • Silver backed copper foil has a silver-colored liner. It is designed for projects that will keep a bright silver solder finish and prevents copper glow from appearing through lighter or transparent glass.

The adhesive strength and solderability are the same — the difference is purely aesthetic.

When should I use black backed copper foil?

Black backed copper foil is ideal when:

  • You are applying black patina
  • Working with transparent or cathedral glass
  • You want to prevent copper from showing through glass edges
  • Creating highly detailed work where edge color matters

It ensures a clean, dark edge and professional finish.

When should I use silver backed copper foil?

Silver backed copper foil is perfect when:

  • Keeping a natural silver solder finish
  • Working with transparent or light-colored glass
  • You want a clean, cool-toned interior edge
  • Avoiding copper warmth along glass seams

It provides a clean, natual solder finish.

Is wider copper foil stronger?

Wider foil (such as 3/8" or 1/2") creates a wider solder bead, which can add strength to:

  • Larger panels
  • Textured glass projects
  • Thicker or layered glass projects

However, structural strength also depends on design, reinforcement, and proper soldering technique.

How do I choose copper foil for textured or thicker glass?

For thicker or textured glass:

  • 3/8" → Good for slightly thicker pieces
  • 1/2" → Ideal for textured glass and heavy edge coverage

Wider foil ensures full edge wrap and strong solder adhesion.

How long does copper foil last?

Unopened copper foil stored in a cool, dry environment typically lasts 1-2 years. For best adhesion:

  • Store in sealed packaging
  • Avoid heat and humidity
  • Keep away from direct sunlight

If adhesive feels weak, it may be past its optimal shelf life.

Why is my copper foil lifting during soldering?

Common causes include:

  • Oils or residue on glass edges
  • Inadequate burnishing
  • Old adhesive
  • Excessive heat during soldering

Always clean glass edges thoroughly and burnish firmly before soldering.

Do beginners need a specific foil size?

Yes! For beginner stained glass artists, 1/4" or 3/8" are the easiest sizes to work with because they provide balanced coverage and forgiving solder lines.
