How to Choose the Right Solder for Stained Glass

Not sure which solder to pick? Here’s a quick guide to help you decide based on your technique and project type:

1. 60/40 Solder (60% Tin / 40% Lead)
  • Melting Range: 361–376°F
  • Best For: Smooth, shiny bead lines
  • Use With:Copper foil
  • Why Choose It: Flows easily and is ideal for detailed solder lines and decorative work.

2. 50/50 Solder (50% Tin / 50% Lead)
  • Melting Point: ~421°F
  • Best For: Structural strength
  • Use With:Lead came
  • Why Choose It: Offers greater durability for projects like panels and windows.

3. Lead-Free Solder
  • Melting Range: 422–428°F
  • Best For: Eco-conscious projects and schools
  • Use With: Copper foil or came
  • Why Choose It: Safe for indoor and educational settings; slightly harder to work with due to higher melting point.

Pro Tip: Always pair your solder with the correct flux and maintain a clean soldering iron for best results.
