October 21, 2026 9am-5pm Instructor: Kevin Tappin
Join Kevin for a practical, hands-on overview of coldworking fused and cold glass in a stained glass studio. Drawing on years of coldworking experience, Kevin will guide you through the machinery, supplies, and techniques needed to shape, refine, and elevate your glasswork. 12” and 8” Amertool lapidary wheels from Covington Engineering will be the primary cold working machines, with additional discussions on wet tile saws, lathes, wet belt sanders, and diamond hand pads. You will learn how to use a lap wheel to clean up minor mistakes on fused glass, along with a discussion on fire-polishing in a kiln to achieve a smooth, glossy finish with or without a slump.
Throughout the day, Kevin will demonstrate specialized coldworking techniques to expand your design options. Time permitting, Kevin will also demonstrate how to facet thicker fused dichroic glass into unique jewelry pieces, giving you valuable insights into precision grinding and finishing, and maybe a couple more fun tricks too?
Please wear closed-toe shoes, dress in layers, and wear clothing you won’t mind getting a bit wet and dirty. Bring safety glasses.
Lap wheels and coldworking supplies will be provided.
Kevin is the owner of Stained Glass Stuff, one of the premiere full service stained glass studios in Ottawa, Canada. His father opened the store in 1987, and Kevin began working within, in 1995. Fusing became a passion for Kevin in 2002 after a first class with Dan Fenton. He then discovered coldworking and loved it. He worked alongside Patty Gray for over 15 years at various shows and sites across North America as her coldworking assistant, and is now stepping out on his own to bring the joy of grinding down rough glass to a glossy, shiny finish to as many people as possible.
